EVERYTHING WRONG WITH ANIMAL GIFT GIVING AND HEIFER INTERNATIONAL

Animal gift giving and programs like Heifer International that allow people to sponsor families or pay for a cow or chickens to be given to a family in a developing country may seem like wonderful programs at face value.  

However, the reality is that these programs are not helpful and good for most of the people and communities involved, and they further cause many of the environmental problems already plaguing these regions. Not to mention that they are deeply speciesist and oppress our fellow non-human animals as well.

Even some vegans seem to support these programs and believe that it's harmful to humans to oppose animal gifting. This is not only ignoring the reality of the human impact of these programs, but it also unnecessarily pits human rights against animal rights. There are other food and hunger programs that support communities with plant-based food solutions and address human hunger and poverty issues while also operating through an anti-speciesist lens.
